Caught in the act

The sum total of
all the little pretences
don’t add up to me …
rather, they tend to fragment
who I might have become.

On the other hand,
this me – this me I’ve become –
forgives the falsehoods,
turning away discreetly,
hiding a slight, knowing smile.
